WHat is EDGE Esports?

Esports Is the Vehicle. Student Transformation Is the Outcome.

EDGE — which stands for the Esports, Development, Growth, and Education Foundation — is a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit based right here in the Coastal Bend.

We’re not a gaming club. We’re a scholastic esports program built around four pillars that change what’s possible for students:

  • COMPETITIVE ESPORTS — structured competition that builds teamwork, strategy, and performance under pressure
  • COLLEGE & CAREER PATHWAYS — scholarships, higher education connections, and exposure to STEM careers
  • STEM & LEADERSHIP EDUCATION — hands-on learning that connects gaming with technology, problem-solving, and leadership
  • STUDENT WELLNESS — building balance, resilience, and healthy habits in and out of the game

But don’t take our word for it — here’s how EDGE players describe the experience:

“I’ve always wanted to pursue a career in gaming, and EDGE has really helped me have a higher chance at achieving that dream.” — EDGE student, age 17

“It helped me make friends after I moved to a new area.” — EDGE student, age 13

“From when I started esports to now, I have had a huge confidence boost. Plus, I didn’t care about college AT ALL — now I’m considering it as a possibility. EDGE Esports is a great opportunity. 10 out of 10! Would recommend!” — EDGE student, age 14

“It has impacted my confidence in gaming and also my skills, because I practice every day to be as best as I can. Being a part of EDGE has made me love gaming even more and makes me excited for the future.” — EDGE student, age 17

For Parents: Why EDGE Is Worth It

If you’re a parent wondering what scholastic esports actually looks like in practice, here’s what families across the Coastal Bend have discovered.

Students participating in EDGE programs show measurable growth in every area, every season. Based on our own pre- and post-season surveys, EDGE players have reported:

  • 266% increase in communication confidence
  • 175% increase in STEM career interest
  • 175% increase in college interest
  • 150% increase in leadership confidence

That’s real transformation — and transformation is exactly what EDGE was designed to create.

Play Esports. Get a College Scholarship.

This is the part most families don’t know about — and it changes everything.

Colleges and universities across the United States are offering esports scholarships, and the numbers are serious. More than 900 institutions now run esports programs through the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) and other collegiate esports leagues, and more than $50 million in esports scholarships are available to student-athletes at the collegiate level each year. Awards range from partial aid to full-ride packages covering tuition, room, board, and more.

The game titles EDGE students compete in all have active collegiate scholarship programs at schools nationwide.

And this isn’t just theoretical for EDGE.

Athena Strother, one of our own EDGE students, earned a full-ride scholarship to play varsity esports at Texas A&M University–Kingsville — the first esports scholarship TAMUK ever awarded, valued at over $106,000.

She didn’t come in as a nationally ranked player. She came in as a motivated student who found her people at EDGE, put in the work, and let the coaches do what they do: connect players to real opportunities.

In her words: “I’ve been offered more opportunities through esports than through any other extracurricular activity or sport I’ve participated in.”

Our College & Career Pathways program exists specifically to help every EDGE player build toward this. Coaches actively connect students to collegiate esports programs, scholarship opportunities, and the kind of competitive experience that makes a college recruiter pay attention.

Ready to Impact Your Future?

Tryouts run in July and August 2026, and are open to Coastal Bend teens ages 13–18 attending public, private, charter, or homeschool programs. First-timers and students with no extracurricular experience are warmly welcomed.

Registration is required — fill out the form to get your spot in the tryout window.
